Bitcoin Node

A Bitcoin node is a computer running software, most commonly Bitcoin Core, that connects to the peer-to-peer network, relays transactions and blocks, and enforces the consensus rules. A full node independently validates everything from the 2009 genesis block forward, checking signatures, supply and script rules across a blockchain that now exceeds 600 gigabytes.

Why it matters

Nodes are where Bitcoin's rules actually live. Miners propose blocks, but every node checks them, and a block that breaks the rules, for example by minting extra coins, is rejected no matter how much hash power produced it. Running a node lets a user verify their own payments without trusting any third party. Public estimates count roughly 20,000 reachable nodes, with many more running privately behind firewalls.

Verification cost is a core axis of the comparison. Verifying gold requires assay equipment, expertise or trust in a chain of custodians, which is why gold markets centralized around certified vaults. Verifying bitcoin requires a few hundred dollars of hardware and an internet connection, and the entire monetary history comes with it. Advocates argue this cheap, sovereign auditability is what keeps bitcoin's 21 million cap credible where gold's paper markets drifted from the metal.
