Bitcoin Core
Bitcoin Core is the reference implementation of the Bitcoin protocol, the open source software descended directly from the client Satoshi Nakamoto released in January 2009. Written primarily in C++, it functions as a full node that validates every block and transaction against the consensus rules, and the large majority of reachable nodes on the network run it.
Why it matters
Bitcoin has no formal specification document; in practice, the consensus rules are whatever Bitcoin Core enforces, which makes the project the de facto definition of what counts as valid bitcoin. Its development process is deliberately conservative. Changes are proposed publicly, reviewed by many contributors, and consensus changes typically pass through the Bitcoin improvement proposal process before shipping. No company owns the code, and hundreds of developers have contributed since the project was renamed from Bitcoin-Qt to Bitcoin Core in 2014.
That concentration is also a standing debate. Critics argue that one dominant implementation is a central point of failure, while supporters answer that a monoculture of tested code reduces the risk of accidental chain splits between differing implementations.

Gold's monetary properties are enforced by physics and verified with assays; bitcoin's are enforced by software that anyone can run and audit. Running Bitcoin Core is how an individual verifies the 21 million coin supply limit personally, without trusting any institution, a form of verification that has no practical equivalent for a holder of gold certificates or vaulted metal.
