Zero Confirmation Channels

Zero confirmation channels are Lightning channels put to use immediately upon creation, before the funding transaction has any blockchain confirmations. They trade a slice of trustlessness for speed: instead of waiting the customary 3 or more confirmations, roughly half an hour, the parties transact instantly while the funding transaction is still in the mempool.

Why it matters

Onboarding is Lightning's hardest user experience problem, and zero-conf channels are its sharpest fix. A new user buying bitcoin in a mobile wallet can receive a channel from a liquidity provider and start paying within seconds, instead of staring at a pending screen. The risk is precisely scoped: until the funding transaction confirms, the funder could theoretically double-spend it and erase the channel, so the accepting side is extending short-lived credit.

In practice the arrangement is used between wallet users and known service providers with reputations at stake, not between anonymous strangers, and the exposure ends the moment the transaction confirms.

How it works

Both peers signal a zero-conf feature at channel opening, and since the funding transaction has no block position yet, the channel is referenced by a temporary alias identifier until confirmation assigns it a real one. Once buried under sufficient blocks, the channel graduates to a normal Lightning channel with the standard security model.
