Tor Network
The Tor network is a system for anonymous internet communication that routes traffic through at least three volunteer-operated relays, encrypting it in layers so that no single relay knows both the origin and the destination. Onion routing was developed at the US Naval Research Laboratory in the 1990s, and the nonprofit Tor Project has maintained the network since 2006, with several thousand relays active worldwide.
How it works
Each hop peels one layer of encryption, learning only the previous and next node in the circuit, like an envelope inside an envelope. Tor also hosts onion services, servers reachable only inside the network whose physical location is concealed. Bitcoin Core ships with native Tor support, and a meaningful fraction of reachable bitcoin nodes accept connections over it. The pairing matters because bitcoin's peer-to-peer layer offers no network privacy on its own: an observer linking a transaction broadcast to an IP address can tie coins to a household, and Tor severs that link. Lightning nodes similarly use Tor to operate without disclosing location.
In the gold vs bitcoin debate
Gold's privacy is inherent in its physicality, since metal changing hands generates no packets to intercept. Digital money must engineer what gold gets free, and Tor is a load-bearing part of that engineering for bitcoin users under surveillance or capital controls. Skeptics note the dependency cuts both ways: bitcoin's censorship resistance partly rests on external infrastructure like Tor remaining available, one more difference between informational and physical bearer assets.
