SIM Swap
A SIM swap is an attack in which a criminal convinces or bribes a mobile carrier into transferring a victim's phone number to a SIM card the attacker controls. Once the number moves, the attacker receives the victim's calls and text messages, including the SMS codes that guard email, exchange, and bank accounts. The FBI logged 1,611 SIM swap complaints in 2021 with reported losses of about 68 million dollars.
Why it matters
The attack exposes a structural weakness: a phone number was never designed to be an identity credential, yet SMS-based two-factor authentication made it the master key to countless accounts. Cryptocurrency holders are prime targets because stolen coins move irreversibly within minutes, and prominent cases have involved losses in the tens of millions of dollars from single victims. The defense is straightforward in principle: remove the phone number from the security chain by using authenticator apps or hardware security keys, and add carrier-level port-out locks.

SIM swapping clarifies what kind of asset each side actually holds. Coins on an exchange protected by SMS codes are only as secure as a carrier's customer service desk, while bitcoin in self-custody on a hardware wallet is immune to the attack entirely, since no phone number can move it. Gold's equivalent is blunt physical reality: a vaulted bar cannot be stolen through a help line, though it carries its own custodial dependencies. The lesson both camps draw is the same, that bearer assets are only bearer assets when held outside account-based systems.
