Round Amounts Heuristic

The round amounts heuristic is a blockchain analysis technique that identifies which output of a bitcoin transaction is the payment and which is the change. Humans transact in round figures, so in a transaction with outputs of exactly 0.5 BTC and 0.36824913 BTC, the round output is probably the payment and the odd remainder is probably change returning to the sender.

Why it matters

Distinguishing payment from change is the seed of most chain surveillance. Once an analyst tags the change output, they can follow a wallet across transactions, cluster its addresses, and build a spending profile, which is how analytics firms map flows for exchanges, investigators, and researchers. A single behavioral tell like a round number can undo the privacy that bitcoin's pseudonymous addresses would otherwise provide, and amounts denominated in round dollar values leave a similar fingerprint once converted at the prevailing exchange rate.

How it works

Analysts score each output for roundness in both BTC and fiat terms, then combine the result with other signals such as script types and spending patterns to assign change with a confidence estimate. It is probabilistic and can be defeated: wallets can randomize amounts, avoid creating change, or use collaborative transactions that break the assumptions entirely. The heuristic is a reminder that bitcoin's privacy depends less on the protocol than on user behavior, since the ledger preserves every habit forever.
