QR Code

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode, invented at the Japanese firm Denso Wave in 1994, that encodes data in a grid of black and white squares readable by a camera. A single code can hold up to 7,089 numeric characters, far more than a traditional barcode, with built-in error correction that survives partial damage.

Why it matters

QR codes solved bitcoin's transcription problem. Addresses are case-sensitive strings of 26 to 62 characters where a single typo can send funds to an unspendable destination, so wallets encode addresses, payment amounts, and Lightning invoices as scannable codes instead. The same pattern powers much of the world's retail payment infrastructure, from Alipay and WeChat Pay in China to India's UPI, making camera-based payment one of the most widely adopted financial interfaces ever deployed.

In the gold vs bitcoin debate

The QR code illustrates a category difference between the assets: bitcoin payments compress to pure information, so the entire checkout experience is a camera and a screen, while gold payments require weighing, assaying, and physical transfer, which is why gold has not functioned as an everyday medium of exchange in over a century. Air-gapped bitcoin wallets also use QR codes to pass signed transactions between offline and online devices, keeping keys unexposed. Gold's defenders reasonably note that needing no device at all is its own kind of robustness.
