Pay-to-Taproot (P2TR)

Pay-to-Taproot, or P2TR, is Bitcoin's newest standard output type, activated with Taproot in November 2021 at block 709,632. Its addresses use bech32m encoding and begin with bc1p. P2TR locks coins to a tweaked public key that can be spent either with a single Schnorr signature, the key path, or by revealing a script from a hidden tree, the script path.

Why it matters

P2TR unifies simple and complex ownership under one appearance. A plain payment, a corporate multisig using MuSig key aggregation, and an elaborate contract with a dozen alternative clauses can all look identical on chain when spent cooperatively, a meaningful privacy gain. When cooperation fails, the script path reveals only the single branch used, keeping the remaining conditions private. Schnorr signatures also verify efficiently in batches and enable aggregation techniques unavailable with ECDSA.

In the gold vs bitcoin debate

P2TR is the current expression of bitcoin's ability to upgrade itself by consensus without breaking old coins, roughly four years from proposal to activation with every prior format still functioning. For the monetary comparison, it deepened the custody and privacy toolkit that separates bitcoin from a purely passive commodity, while the deliberate slowness of the change is cited as evidence the system resists capture.
