OTC Desk

An OTC desk, short for over-the-counter, executes large cryptocurrency trades privately between two parties instead of on a public exchange order book. Desks quote a single price for an entire block, with typical minimum trade sizes around $100,000 to $250,000, and settle directly with the counterparty.

Why it matters

Large orders placed on public exchanges move the market against the buyer before completion and broadcast intent to every observer. OTC desks solve both problems, absorbing size from their own inventory and network of counterparties so the trade never touches the visible book. Miners selling production, funds building positions and corporate treasuries have historically routed through OTC, which means a meaningful share of bitcoin volume never appears in exchange data.

In the gold vs bitcoin debate

The OTC structure is one place bitcoin's market resembles gold's rather than improving on it. London's gold market is essentially one large OTC network, with the same benefits of discretion and the same cost in transparency. The difference is settlement: an OTC bitcoin trade can settle on chain within the hour with cryptographic finality, while allocated gold transfers depend on vault operators and clearing systems. For price discovery, both markets leave analysts inferring flows they cannot directly see.
