Orphan Block

An orphan block is a valid block that is excluded from the main Bitcoin chain, typically because another block at the same height propagated faster and the network built on the competitor. Strictly, developers call these stale blocks, reserving orphan for a block whose parent is unknown, but common usage covers both. The excluded miner loses the entire reward, currently 3.125 BTC plus fees.

Why it matters

Orphan blocks are the natural consequence of a decentralized network with propagation delay: two miners can solve blocks seconds apart, and only one lineage survives. The orphan rate measures network health, since slow propagation raises it and hands well-connected miners an advantage. Improvements such as compact block relay and dedicated relay networks have made stale blocks rare events compared with Bitcoin's early years. Transactions in an orphaned block are not lost; they return to the mempool and confirm in later blocks, which is why exchanges wait for multiple confirmations before crediting deposits.
