OP\_RETURN

OP_RETURN is a Bitcoin Script opcode that marks a transaction output as provably unspendable, allowing a small amount of arbitrary data to be embedded in the blockchain without bloating the set of spendable coins. Because such outputs can never be spent, nodes can safely discard them from the UTXO set. Bitcoin Core relayed up to 80 bytes of OP_RETURN data per transaction by default for over a decade, a limit raised substantially in Core version 30 in 2025.

Why it matters

OP_RETURN was a compromise. People were already embedding data in fake addresses, which polluted the UTXO set forever; OP_RETURN gave data a designated, prunable place. It carries timestamps, asset protocol markers, sidechain commitments and proofs of existence. The 2025 relaxation of relay limits reignited a long-running dispute over whether Bitcoin should accommodate arbitrary data or discourage anything beyond payments, with node operators split between filtering and relaying.

The data question connects to monetary purity. Gold cannot carry messages, and some bitcoiners consider that a feature worth imitating, arguing block space should serve money alone. Others note that fee-paying data users subsidize the security budget that protects everyone. The OP_RETURN debates, in 2014 and again in 2025, are where bitcoin repeatedly decides what kind of asset it is.
