Nostr

Nostr, short for notes and other stuff transmitted by relays, is an open protocol for censorship-resistant publishing in which users are identified by cryptographic key pairs rather than accounts, and messages are distributed by independent relays. Created by the pseudonymous developer fiatjaf in 2020, it gained prominence when Jack Dorsey donated 14 BTC, then worth about $245,000, to its development in December 2022.

Why it matters

Nostr applies bitcoin's architectural ideas to speech. There is no company, no server that must stay online, and no account that can be deleted: a user signs notes with a private key and any relay can carry them, so deplatforming requires every relay to refuse a key simultaneously. The protocol is deliberately simple, which has produced hundreds of interoperable clients.

Its tightest link to bitcoin is payments: zaps let users send Lightning payments to one another's posts, embedding money natively in the social layer, something advertising-funded platforms never offered.

In the gold vs bitcoin debate

Nostr matters to the monetary comparison as evidence of a broader stack. Gold is an asset alone; bitcoin sits inside a growing ecosystem of key-based, permissionless infrastructure where identity, payments and publishing share the same cryptographic foundations. Advocates argue these network effects compound bitcoin's adoption in ways no commodity can replicate.
