Merkle-tree attestation
A Merkle-tree attestation is a proof-of-reserves technique in which a custodian hashes every customer balance into a Merkle tree and publishes the single root hash. Each customer receives a compact proof, a path of hashes typically a few dozen entries long, showing that their balance was included in the committed total.
Why it matters
The method lets an exchange prove its liabilities without publishing its customer list, and it became an industry standard response after FTX collapsed in November 2022 while claiming assets it did not hold. Customers who verify their inclusion make omission risky for the custodian, since any excluded balance can be exposed by its owner.
The limits matter as much as the mechanism. An attestation is a snapshot that says nothing about the next day, borrowed coins can dress up the asset side, negative balances can be hidden without careful construction, and proving liabilities is only half the equation: it must be paired with proof of ownership of on-chain assets to demonstrate solvency.

Gold custodians answer the same question with bar lists and third-party vault audits, which are periodic, manual, and trust-dependent. Merkle-tree attestations are cheap, cryptographic, and verifiable by every customer individually, illustrating bitcoin's broader claim that auditability can be self-service rather than delegated.
