Mempool Explorer

A mempool explorer is a tool that visualizes the queue of unconfirmed Bitcoin transactions, showing pending transaction counts, fee rate distributions and projected next blocks. The most widely used, mempool.space, is open source and lets anyone watch fee pressure build and clear in real time across the roughly 144 blocks Bitcoin produces each day.

Why it matters

Fees on Bitcoin are set by open auction, not by a fixed schedule. A mempool explorer shows what other users are currently bidding, which helps a sender choose a fee rate that confirms in the next block, in a few hours, or whenever congestion clears. It also displays each transaction's position in the queue, so users can decide whether to wait, replace the transaction with a higher-fee version, or accept the delay.

Researchers and businesses use explorers to study congestion patterns, monitor network health, and time large transactions for low-fee periods such as weekends.

In the gold vs bitcoin debate

The existence of free public dashboards for Bitcoin's entire pending settlement queue underlines how auditable the network is. There is no equivalent tool showing pending gold deliveries at vaults or clearing houses, which is one reason bitcoin advocates emphasize verifiability as a core advantage of the asset.
