M-of-N

M-of-N describes a multisignature arrangement in which N keys are created and any M of them are sufficient to authorize a transaction. A 2-of-3 setup, the most common pattern in bitcoin custody, lets an owner lose or compromise any one key without losing funds, because the remaining two still meet the threshold.

Why it matters

Single-key custody concentrates all risk in one secret: one theft, fire, or forgotten backup is total loss. M-of-N spreads that risk across locations and people. Keys can sit in separate cities, with separate hardware vendors, or with a collaborative custody company that holds one key and can co-sign but never spend alone. The same structure supports corporate treasuries, where no single officer can move funds, and inheritance plans, where heirs and advisors jointly recover coins.

The tradeoff is complexity. More keys mean more backups, more devices, and more procedures that must actually be tested before they are needed.

Gold cannot be M-of-N. Shared control of metal requires vaults, contracts, and custodians, and whoever physically holds the bar ultimately holds the asset. Bitcoin makes shared control a native property of the money itself, enforced by the network rather than by law, which is one of the clearest functional differences between the two.
