Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) Wallet
A hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet is a bitcoin wallet that derives all of its keys from a single master seed, following the BIP32 standard proposed by Bitcoin Core developer Pieter Wuille in 2012. From one backup, typically written down as a 12 or 24 word seed phrase, the wallet can regenerate an effectively unlimited tree of key pairs.
How it works
The seed feeds a one-way derivation function that produces a master key, which in turn derives child keys along numbered paths, forming a hierarchy. Standards such as BIP39 define how the seed maps to words drawn from a fixed 2,048-word list, and BIP44 defines conventional paths so different wallet apps can recover the same accounts. Because derivation is deterministic, the wallet can hand out a fresh address for every payment, which improves privacy, while the user still needs only the original seed to recover everything. Extended public keys allow watch-only wallets: a merchant's web server can generate receiving addresses without ever holding a key that can spend.

HD wallets transformed what it means to store wealth. Before BIP32, losing a wallet file meant losing coins generated after the last backup; after it, a few memorized words can secure any amount and be restored anywhere on earth. Gold cannot be backed up, cannot cross a border unnoticed in meaningful quantity, and cannot be duplicated for redundancy. Gold advocates reply that a seed phrase can be forgotten, stolen, or coerced, while a vault requires no memory. The comparison is really between physical and informational custody, each with distinct failure modes.
