Genesis Block
The genesis block is the first block of the Bitcoin blockchain, block height 0, created by Satoshi Nakamoto on 3 January 2009. Its coinbase transaction famously embeds a newspaper headline from that day's Times of London: Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks. Its 50 BTC reward is unspendable, a quirk of how the block was hardcoded.
Why it matters
The genesis block is Bitcoin's founding document and its trust anchor in one object. Technically, every full node hardcodes it, and every subsequent block must trace an unbroken chain of valid proof of work back to it, so all verification ultimately terminates there. Historically, the embedded headline does double duty, timestamping the launch, proving the block could not have been mined earlier, and declaring intent: Bitcoin was born as a response to the 2008 financial crisis and the bailout era. The genesis address has since accumulated substantial bitcoin in tribute donations, deliberately burned by senders who know it can never be spent.
In the gold vs bitcoin debate
Gold has no genesis moment; its monetary history dissolves into prehistory, which advocates count as the deepest possible Lindy credential. Bitcoin's precise birthday cuts the other way for each camp: skeptics see an asset barely older than a smartphone, while supporters see the first money whose entire history, every unit and transaction since second one, is perfectly documented and independently verifiable. The headline in block 0 frames the whole debate, two escapes from the same banking system, one ancient and one engineered.
