End-to-End (E2E) Encryption

End-to-end encryption, or E2E encryption, is a communication design in which only the sender and intended recipient can read a message, because keys exist solely on their devices. The service carrying the message cannot decrypt it. The Signal protocol brought the model to mass scale, and WhatsApp deployed it to more than 2 billion users in 2016.

Why it matters

E2E encryption changed the default assumption of digital communication from readable-by-the-provider to readable-by-no-one-else. It protects against hackers, insider abuse, and mass surveillance alike, which is why it remains politically contested: governments regularly propose access mechanisms, and cryptographers uniformly respond that a backdoor for one party is a vulnerability for all.

The concept extends beyond messaging to any system where intermediaries should carry data without controlling it. That principle, trust the math rather than the middleman, is the same one that animated digital cash research, and the cypherpunk mailing lists where E2E tools were championed are where Bitcoin's white paper was first circulated.

Bitcoin applies the end-to-end idea to value: transactions are authorized solely by keys at the endpoints, and every intermediary in between, miners and nodes, can verify but never spend. Gold achieves endpoint control only through physical possession, which cannot be exercised remotely.
