Encoding

Encoding is the representation of data in a specific format for storage or transmission, without hiding its content. Unlike encryption, encoding uses no secret: anyone can reverse it. Bitcoin relies on several encodings, including hexadecimal for hashes, Base58Check for legacy addresses, and bech32 for segwit addresses, which restricts itself to 32 characters chosen to survive human transcription.

Why it matters

Money that travels as data lives or dies by its encodings. A bitcoin address is an encoding of a script or key hash plus a checksum, and that checksum is the only thing standing between a typo and permanently lost funds. Base58Check deliberately drops easily confused characters such as zero, capital O, capital I, and lowercase l, while bech32 can detect up to four character errors and locate where they occurred.

Encodings also define interoperability. Wallets from different vendors can exchange funds because they agree on address formats, and standards like PSBT, a format for passing partially signed transactions between devices, let hardware wallets cooperate with software they have never seen.

Gold needs no encoding, its atomic number is its format, and that physical self-evidence is part of the metal's appeal. Bitcoin's dependence on formats and checksums is a genuine complexity cost, one that user error can turn expensive. The counterweight is that encoded value moves at the speed of information: the same string of characters works in a QR code, a radio broadcast, or a memorized phrase, options no bar of metal offers.
