eCash
eCash was the first serious attempt at digital cash, created by cryptographer David Chaum and commercialized through his company DigiCash, founded in 1989. Built on blind signatures, a technique Chaum published in 1982, eCash let users withdraw digital tokens from a bank and spend them without the bank being able to trace who spent what, replicating the privacy of physical cash online.
Why it matters
eCash proved that cryptographic money was possible and that privacy could be engineered rather than promised. One bank in Missouri and several European banks ran trials in the mid-1990s, but adoption stalled, credit cards were good enough for consumers, and DigiCash filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
Its central weakness was architectural: eCash still required a bank to issue tokens and prevent double spending, so it inherited every institutional risk of the system it improved on. When the company died, the money died with it. That failure defined the problem Bitcoin later solved, digital cash with no issuer to fail, and Chaum's work is cited across the cypherpunk lineage that produced it.
In the gold vs bitcoin debate
eCash is the missing link in the story both camps tell. It showed that digitizing money's convenience was easy but digitizing its bearer quality, the property gold has always had, was the hard part. Bitcoin's contribution was removing the issuer entirely, making it the first digital asset that, like gold, is nobody's liability.
