Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT)
Byzantine fault tolerance is the ability of a distributed system to keep functioning correctly even when some participants fail arbitrarily or act maliciously, including sending conflicting information to different peers. Classical results show that agreement is possible only when fewer than one third of participants are faulty, so a system of 3f plus 1 nodes can survive f traitors.
Why it matters
Any digital money shared across a network must answer one question: how do honest participants agree on who owns what when some participants lie? Traditional payment systems answer it with a trusted central operator. Byzantine fault tolerant designs answer it with redundancy and voting, but classical BFT protocols only work among a fixed, known set of participants, which still requires someone to decide who may join. That limitation kept decentralized digital cash out of reach for decades.
In the gold vs bitcoin debate
Gold never needed Byzantine fault tolerance because possession of metal is a physical fact that no dishonest message can fake. Bitcoin's contribution was achieving practical Byzantine fault tolerance in an open network where anyone can join anonymously: proof of work replaces known identities with provably expended energy, making dishonesty expensive rather than impossible. That breakthrough is what allows a digital asset to share gold's core property of not depending on any trusted issuer.
